How to sign up with BMI

BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) is a performing rights organization that represents songwriters, composers, and music publishers.

If you are a writer or composer, you can register with BMI to ensure that you are properly credited and compensated for the use of your music. Here's how you can register with BMI as a writer or composer:

  1. Gather your information.

Before you begin the registration process, make sure you have the following information on hand:

  • Your full name

  • Your date of birth

  • Your mailing address

  • Your phone number

  • Your email address

  • The names of any co-writers or co-composers

  • The titles of your songs

  • The names of any music publishing companies that you are affiliated with

  1. Create an account on the BMI website. Go to the BMI website (www.bmi.com) and click on the "Join BMI" button. Follow the prompts to create an account. You will need to provide your personal information and create a username and password.

  2. Complete the application. Once you have created an account, you will be prompted to complete the application process. This includes providing information about your music, such as the titles of your songs, the names of any co-writers or co-composers, and the names of any music publishing companies you are affiliated with. You will also need to provide proof of ownership for your music, such as copies of your songwriting or publishing contracts.

  3. Submit your application. Once you have completed the application, review it carefully to make sure all of the information is correct. Then, submit your application by clicking the "Submit" button.

  4. Wait for your application to be reviewed. After you have submitted your application, BMI will review it to make sure all of the required information has been provided. This process can take several weeks.

  5. Register your works. Once your application has been approved, you will need to register your works with BMI. This involves providing information about each of your songs, including the title, the names of the writers and composers, and the release date. You can register your works online through the BMI website or by filling out a registration form and mailing it to BMI.

By following these steps, you can register with BMI as a writer or composer and ensure that you are properly credited and compensated for the use of your music.
